Thailand: Resolve the Crisis through Democracy, not Crackdown

Regional Joint Statement

Thailand: Resolve the Crisis through Democracy, not Crackdown

We are deeply concerned over the current situation in Thailand where military-backed Prime Minister Ahbisit Vejjajiva has declared a state of emergency and started a bloody crackdown amidst escalating protests calling for fresh election.

The situation is worrying as the Thai government closes down all opposition media and gives sweeping new powers to the security forces to prepare for a violent crackdown on the Red Shirt protesters. Thai troops are using excessive force including tanks and live ammunition, against pro-democracy demonstrators in Bangkok.

Stop Collusion with Sri Lankan Govt! Stop Repatriation of Sri Lankan Refugees!

Humane and Ethical Treatment for Sri Lankan Asylum Seekers

The PSM is concerned for the safety and well-being of the 207 Sri Lankan asylum-seekers who are being held at the Immigration Detention Centre at the KL International Airport as well as the 108 Sri Lankan refugees detained at Pekan Nanas Immigration Detention Centre

According to our sources, there are 15 women and 6 children among these 207 Sri Lankans who were picked up at a road-block in Batu Pahat 10 days ago before being transported to the KLIA for detention. Out of the 108 people detained at Pekan Nenas Immigration Detention Centre, there are 10 women and 10 children. One of the women is in her 8th month of pregnancy. It was also reported that the Sri Lankan Embassy, including the Deputy High Commissioner were forcing a group of Sri Lankan refugees to sign agreements for repatriation. The refugees refused to sign the agreements and the embassy personnel assaulted them by beating and kicking them to force them to sign the agreement.

Our Statement On Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared victory over Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) as the last LTTE strongpoints crumbled. The victory is for no one but only the chauvinistic nationalist Sinhalese government led by Mahinda Rajapaksa, which has launched a brutal, merciless and cold-blooded military offensive against Tamil population for several months, inflicted nothing but death, destruction and misery. The victory which proclaimed by Rajapaksa, will not put an end to the conflict that has lasted for several decades, but signals new assault on working people in Sri Lanka - Tamil, Sinhalese and Muslim.

Solidarity Message to the people of Nepal

About 200 people had gathered at about 8pm for the vigil, which was declared illegal by the police who were also present at the venue.

Bangkok: Right-wing mob riots outside parliament

Since late evening on the 6th October 2008, the ultra right-wing fascist mob which calls itself the "Peoples Alliance for Democracy" (PAD) laid plans to lay siege to the Thai parliament. They came prepared with iron bars and crash helmets. Their plan, as always, was to create chaos in the hope that the military would stage a coup or that the ruling party would once again be dissolved by the courts. Their claim is that the present government lead, by the Peoples Power Party or PPP (ex-Premier Thaksin's Thai Rak Thai in another name), is "illegitimate". The party and the previous TRT party have consistently won large majorities in elections, proving that they are popular with the poor, who make up the majority of the population. This support from the poor is not surprising, since the party was the first elite party in 30 years to offer a universal health care scheme and public funds to develop the rural economy.
