Honor Orang Asli Demands

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) stand in solidarity with the Orang Asli community and call upon the Government to honour the demands and plight of the Orang Asli – the Indigenous people in our land.

PSM is also angered by the comment of the Minister Shafie Apdal who said that the Orang Asli were not protesting but just sightseeing. This kind of comments shows the lack of respect on the part of the Minister and his attitude towards the plight of this community.

YB Sivanesan needs to be educated on squatters

I refer to NST 23/10/08 and 24/10/08.

For the past two days, YB Sivanesan has been making outrageous statements on urban pioneers (peneroka bandar) in Perak state, in the context of the 12 families who are being moved out of the Kinta River reserve.

Among other things, he said:

# If the 12 families stay put and do not accept rental of government flats as alternative housing, and RM3000 compensation, the state will forcibly move them out (NST 23/10/08).

Giving farmers their own land is one way of addressing the escalating global food crisis, said Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).

This was one of the issues in the 21-point resolution passed by the yet-to-be registered political party at its 10th congress in Port Dickson over the weekend.

16 low-cost houses, this is what will take to resolve this ten year wait. Yes... this is the demand put forward by the former plantation workers from Ladang Galloway and Madingley to YB Dr. Xavier the newly appointed Selangor State Exco for Health, Estates Workers, Poverty and Caring Government.

This morning, representatives from both estates - Galloway and Madingley together with PSM's Secretary General, S.Arutchelvan, Community Development Center Coordinator S. Paremeswari and Sivakumar held a meeting with the Pakatan Rakyat Government to solve their housing problem which has been continuing for more than 10 years.

What happen to our 4 acres of land? This was the question asked by the former Kajang Estate Workers who are mostly in their late 60s and 70s to Selangor State Exco for Health, Estates Workers, Poverty and Caring Government. Dr. Xavier Jeyakumar. This was the same question they asked 23 years ago. Today, with the new State Government, the once again hoped these question would soon be resolved.

This morning, representatives from five estates in Bangi-Semenyih led by PSM's Secretary General, S.Arutchelvan met with Dr. Xavier, the newly appointed Selangor State Exco for Health, Estates Workers, Poverty and Caring Government.

The delegation today was represented by workers leaders from five estates- Abaco Estate, Bangi Estate, Denudin Estate, Semenyeh Estate and Glengowrie. Also present was Plantation Workers Support Committee (JSML-JERIT) coordinator T.Ramalingam and E.Pareamas , JERIT's Housing Coalition Coordinator.

The Selangor Exco for Housing, Building Management and Squatter, Iskandar Abdul Samad assured the Housing and Urban Pioneers Coalition, JERIT, that all eviction of urban pioneers communities from their land in Selangor would be halted and the state will withdraw all Eviction Notices in Selangor.

This was told to the representatives from seven urban pioneer Kampungs in a meeting initiated by JERIT with the Selangor State Exco, En Iskandar Abdul Samad. For the record, the Urban Pioneers Coalition, JERIT has been actively campaigning and protesting against forced eviction and the Selangor State Policy for Zero Squatters since 2005.

AMID chants of protest against the construction of a new hypermarket, labourers continued their work as usual.

About 100 Kota Damansara residents gathered at the construction site in Kota Damansara recently to protest against the project, as it would affect their daily life.

Barely one month after election, Dr. Nasir Hashim, Kota Damansara Socialist State Assemblyman and PSM National Chairperson was back in the streets leading around 300 protesters against the construction of a Carrefour Hypermarket at a residential area in Kota Damansara.

At about 11am residents from D'Villa Avenue, D'Villa Botany, Gugusan Dedap, Bayu Damansara, RT Seri Utama, Damansara Emas and the Friends of Kota Damansara gathered in front of the hypermarket construction site with banners in protest. The message was clear. "WE DON'T WANT ANOTHER HYPERMARKET", "PKNS AND MBPJ CHEATED US" were some of the wordings on the banners.
