Give plantation workers a better deal

Source: Malaysiakini

The plantation sector should come under the ambit of the Rural and Regional Development Ministry and be accorded the same privileges and benefits that Felda settlers enjoy, said Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).

arutchelvan and psmSecretary-general Arutchelvan said plantation workers have been sidelined for the past 52 years and left to fend for themselves whenever the economic situation saps the source of their livelihood.

“MIC has been sending the wrong message to these workers by equating plantations with poverty and encouraging them to move to urban areas where they encounter various types of social and economic problems,” he said.

To illustrate his point, he said four plantations had to make way for the development of Putrajaya and the displaced workers were shifted into cramped multi-storey flats where they faced social and economic problems.

Battle tried squatters want MB’s assurance for alternative lots

Source: Malaysiakini

In a sign of changing times squatters handed over a memorandum to the state government seeking Menteri Besar Zambry Abdul Kadir’s assurance that they would be allocated alternative housing lots once they meet the Oct 31 deadline for leaving the former mining land.

PSM memo to MB 24092009The memorandum from 183 residents of Kampung Meru Tin was received by Zambry’s personal secretary when they had actually wanted the menteri besar ,who had promised them that he would look into their grievances personally, to receive the document.

Although, on Aug 20 Zambry had given them the Form 5A application for land titles and offer letters from Kinta Land Office for the resettlement plan, the villagers who had been staying on the land since 1940, still remember the bitter experience other squatters had gone through.

Pakatan must do more to convince rural Malays

The Pakatan Rakyat coalition parties must target the urban especially the rural Malay population in the country if they want to rule the nation during the next general election.Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) committee member and Sungai Siput MP Dr D Jeyakumar said that Pakatan cannot just depend on the Chinese and Indian voters who are in the minority for their political survival.

“Pakatan has to first address the psychological fear of the Malay community that they will be marginalised and treated as second class citizens if Pakatan takes control of the nation,” Jeyakumar pointed out.

Indian squatter families’ 60 year-old land title problem

Source: Humayun Kabir, Malaysiakini

For more than half a century 120 Indian families have been waiting for titles to the land they have been squatting on in Buntong and promises made by various heads of the state government have all come to naught so far.

In 1999, the then Menteri Besar Ramli Ngeh Talib had promised to give the squatters alternative land lots but that did not materialise.

Again in 2008, his successor former Menteri Besar Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali promised the squatters another piece of land as the plots pledged to them had been switched to the Gamuda double-track railway project.
