Post March 2008 is a period of great promise. Now both fronts, the Barisan Nasional and the Pakatan Rakyat, have to compete to prove themselves to the people of Malaysia. There is no doubt that the breaking of the 2/3 majority in Parliament as well as the conquest of 5 states by the Pakatan Rakyat has propelled Malaysian politics into a new era.
However it is an era that has great risks as well. UMNO is now akin to an injured tiger. Still strong because it is still the largest single party in the country and it practically controls the levers of government at the Federal level. However it faces the hitherto unthought of possibility of losing control of the Federal Government either at the next elections or even sooner if Anwar and the PR can induce enough BN MPs to cross over. On 18th June 2008, the Application for Leave by the Ex-Kamiri rubber tappers was turned down, with costs awarded to Guthrie by a 3-man panel at the Federal Court in Putra Jaya. But paradoxically, the 27 workers who had been retrenched in 1999 by Guthrie, were happily calling the occasion a victory, while Guthrie must be ruing the day when it decided to use its power and financial clout to take a legal short-cut to evict its former workers!
This story begins 9 years ago. These 27 former employees of Guthrie, many of whom are third generation workers with Guthrie, refused to move out their estate quarters in 2000, because they felt that the RM 330 per year of service that was offered by Guthrie as retrenchment benefits was grossly insufficient. They asked repeatedly that Guthrie meet them to discuss better terms of compensation. ARTIKEL PENUH (MORE) »

I refer to the Malaysiakini report PSM allowed to register as political party.
The Malaysian government’s decision to allow for Parti Sosialis Malaysia to apply again for registration after ten years of waiting is a welcome sign for democracy despite the hard-handed oppression against an ideology that has swept through much of the world for over 100 years now.
Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has finally obtained approval from the Home Ministry to register as a political party after a 10-year battle which included a protracted law suit against the government.

S. Arutchelvan said the party’s lawyers today asked the Federal Court for an adjournment of the case where PSM is appealing against the Court of Appeal’s decision to reject its application to register as a political party.
The Federal Court has subsequently decided to put off the case pending the registration of the party. ARTIKEL PENUH (MORE) »

The government has given a rare green light to the creation of a new political party, with the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) winning recognition after a decade-long battle. MCPX

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said he last week gave his approval to the party, which was once deemed a threat to national security and had to fight through the courts for legal registration.
“We consider it is appropriate that it be given an opportunity,” Syed Hamid told reporters, adding it must now show it can comply with registration requirements.
“When I look at the application, so long as they want to be a national party, that they are represented nationally, and comply with the law it is alright,” he said.
“The only party we will not register is the communist party.” ARTIKEL PENUH (MORE) »
