12 years to build, 3 hours to demolish

Malaysiakini, 16 Feb 2010

Barely 48 hours after the Federal Court had affirmed Zambry Abd Kadir as Perak menteri besar on Feb 9, a demolition team from the Land Office of Larut Matang and Selama descended on a 15-hectare plot farmed by squatters in the Air Kuning area, on the southern rim of Taiping.

Air Kuning falls under Changkat Jering which is one of three state wards in the parliamentary constituency of Bukit Gantang, presently held by deposed Menteri Besar Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin of PAS.

NONEThe state seat was won by Mohd Osman Jailu, formerly of PKR but from February last year, a BN-supporting independent.

Armed with hammers, axes and chainsaws, the demolition squad took three hours to level two wooden shacks that served as dwelling places for workers and employers of a 10-person cooperative who had developed the former mining land the past 12 years.

They cleared undergrowth and shrubs, cultivated vegetable plots, reared fish in ponds, raised cows, goats and poultry, and cultivated fruit trees.

NONEBut within a matter of three hours on the morning of Feb 11, two days after the apex court’s decision affirming Zambry as menteri besar, a demolition squad arrived at the plot which is located behind the Taman Kuning Sari housing estate.

The demolition squad, from the Land Office of Larut Matang and Selama, were backed up by the Federal Reserve Unit, police from the Taiping contingent of the force, JKR Taiping, and tractors from Gamuda, the developers of the double-tracking system connecting Ipoh with the north. Monarch Rules

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) is disappointed with the Federal Court Decision in declaring Zambry Abd Kadir of BN as the rightful Perak Menteri Besar. The decision has further consequences as this means a Ruler can override the verdict of the people in deciding who shall be the leader of the State or a country.

The decision also means that the democratic verdict of the people through an Election can be overruled by the ruler by degree without letting the Assemblyperson chosen by the people having a say.

This verdict will further strengthen our convictions that the courts are not independent when it comes to major decisions. This dangerous precedent will put Malaysian democracy and justice many steps backwards.

When Education is a business (PTPTN Loan)

The PSM views the government’s current concern over the allocation of PTPTN loans as a piecemeal critique of a very wrong policy, that of privatized tertiary education.

The Higher Education Minister has been quoted as saying that the fund terms of the PTPTN would be reviewed to make sure only needy students would avail of it. This is not because the government has had a sudden change of heart favouring the poor. Rather in its typical cart before the horse style of doing business, it has discovered that PTPTN borrowers have defaulted to the tune of RM1 billion, and also that if not reviewed the government bill for private education will shoot up to RM5 billion by 2013.

What is needed is not a review of the PTPTN loan terms but a total revamp of the higher education system which has in great part been contracted out to private businessmen. ARTIKEL PENUH (MORE) »

PSM Protests to State Election Commission

Ipoh Echo, 30 Jan 2010

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) issued a memorandum to the Perak State Election Commission for its delay in the issuance of a permit to register voters during the Thaipusam celebrations on January 30. The protest memo was handed over to its Deputy Director, Wan Mohammed Salleh by PSM Deputy Chairman, Ms M. Saraswathy. She was accompanied by PSM Committee member K. Segar Kunasekaran.

PSM had applied to the Election Commission last December for approval to register voters in view of the high number of unregistered voters in the country (500,000 in Perak). The party was then informed that its appointment letter would be released within two weeks. It had requested for 10,000 application forms. However, PSM was later informed that such a number would require the EC to send its officers along for the exercise. This was made conditional upon the release of the registration forms. The party found this strange as no such condition was extended to other political parties. ARTIKEL PENUH (MORE) »
