The forty thousand strong mobilisation today in Kuala Lumpur and the thousands who did not make it because of police road-blocks gave a very clear and precise message to the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak – repeal the draconian Internal Security Act (ISA).
The pro-ISA gathering fizzled out or was drowned by the immense anti-ISA gathering led by the Abolish ISA Movement – a coalition of 83 organisation including Parti Sosialis Malaysia.
This has been the biggest ever gathering organised against the ISA since the draconian law was enacted 49 years ago. The police used chemical laced tear gas on the peaceful and well organised crowd. More than four hundred people were arrested. Including scores of PSM supporters. The gathering spearheaded by PAS and other opposition party was the biggest opposition rally since the last general election. PSM and JERIT played prominent role with the other parties in organising this huge gathering. It was a victory for the democratic movement and a blow to the Government and the pro-ISA group.
The Prime Minister yesterday called on the anti-ISA protesters to give him ideas on how to improve this draconian law which his Government said that they are in the process of amending it. The message today was clear that the people want the ISA abolished.
The ISA has been used for the last five decades, by all the Prime Ministers against democratic movements, workers movement, civil society and student movements to enable the Government to cling to its power. It was the the deadliest arsenal in the hands of the ruling party.
PSM applaud the brave people who came to the streets today to make a point. The rally today was participated by a huge number of young people given hope that the strugggle ahead is bright.

URGENT APPEAL: Police using teargas and chemical-laced water cannons at anti-ISA rally in KL. Over 400 arrested!
According to eyewitnesses and news reports, the police have arrested over 400 people and have been deploying tear gas and chemical-laced water cannons indiscriminately at the anti-ISA rally in KL today. These are some of the unjust actions being taken against individuals attending the ‘Himpunan Mansuh ISA’ rally that was held Kuala Lumpur today to call for the abolition of the ISA. Water cannons and teargas are reportedly still being deployed at the PAS HQ right now where a press conference is being held.
We condemn the police for their ongoing attacks and intimidation on freedom of expression and right to assembly, fundamental rights which are guaranteed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.
We demand that the police take the following actions:
- Stop all use of tear gas and water cannons immediately
- Release these brave activists immediately and unconditionally
- Stop harassing the protestors from exercising their rights to assembly and stop this assult on their freedom of expression

49 tahun yang lalu, pada 1hb. Ogos 1960, Akta Keselamatan Dalam Negeri (ISA) telah digubal di Parlimen Malaya oleh Parti Perikatan yang dianggotai oleh UMNO, MCA dan MIC.
Akta zalim ini telah digunakan oleh semua Perdana Menteri Malaysia, dari Tengku Abdul Rahman sehingga Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Ia telah digunakan terhadap semua kaum dan agama di negara ini. Ia berjaya membenteras gerakan mahasiswa, gerakan pekerja dan gerakan reformasi. Ia berjaya memenjarakan pemimpin politik pelbagai aliran dan idelogi politik.
Ia adalah senjata yang paling berbisa dimiliki oleh Parti Perikatan dulu dan Barisan Nasional sekarang untuk menentang hak demokrasi dan kebebasan rakyat.
Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) menyeru segala ahli parti dan barisan fron parti untuk turun beramai-ramai untuk menuntut akta zalim ISA dibubarkan, Kem kamunting ditutup dan tahanan dibebaskan. Jadikan 1 Ogos, sebagai tarikh memprotes akta yang maha zalim ini.
Hak berhimpun secara aman adalah hak demokrasi rakyat Malaysia dan PSM menyeru pihak polis untuk menghormati hak ini dan tidak membuat sebarang tindakan untuk mencabul hak ini.
Cukup sudah kesengsaraan ISA! Marilah kita sama-sama menguburkan akta zalim ini.

Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI) melancarkan Himpunan Mansuh ISA pada 1 Ogos 2009. Sidang Akhbar hari ini dihadiri oleh wakil dari PAS, PSM dan PKR. Setiausaha Agung Parti Sosiais Malaysia (PSM), Sdr. S.Arutchelvan semasa membuat ulasan program ini dalam sidang akhbar mengatakan PSM akan memobilisasi massa rakyat untuk menghadiri perhimpunan raksasa ini dan akan memberi sokongan padu kerana program ini telah diendos semasa Kongres PSM di Ipoh pada akhir bulan Mei lalu.Beliau turut mengatakan bahawa tarikh 1 ogos adalah satu tarikh yang signifikan kerana ia adalah tarikh ISA digubal, iaitu 24 jam selepas Darurat 1948 Penjajah ditamatkan pada 31 Julai 1960.Igos 1960 juga adalah permulaan darurat tidak rasmi dalam bentuk ISA dimana ribuan rakyat Malaysia telah ditahan tanpa bicara. Walaupun ribuan telah ditahan namum impak ini adalah kepada jutaan rakyat Malaysia yang sentiasa takut kepada akta zalim ini. Kini 1 ogos 2008, digunakan sebagai tarikh keramat untuk membuat protes raksana menuntut akta ini dimansuhkan dan Kem kamunting ditutup buat selamalamanya.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi must immediately form the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC), said Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) today.
Following the latest custodial death involving a 22-year-old youth, the opposition party pointed out that there is just no more room for excuses or reasons.

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) views the death of A. Kugan under police custody as a serious crime and a violation to human rights, particularly the right to life under Article 5 of the Federal Constitution.
The death of A. Kugan is not an isolated case and it is the total failure of the Government to give protection to those kept under its custody. We are further angered by the fact that the Police are now trying to divert the issue from death in custody to tampering with evidence of the body of the victim. The CPO of Selangor Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar has also sort of concluded that the bruises in the body of the victim did not cause his death. With such kind of attitude, it would be useless and a waste of public funds to get the police to investigate this death. The CPO should be immediately disciplined for his action and removed completely from this case for interfering in the investigation.

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) lashed out at Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar over his ‘double standards and lies’ regarding the arrest of 21 participants in last Saturday’s anti-war candlelight vigil.
Secretary-general S Arutchelvan said PSM was bemused at Syed Hamid’s attempt to defend the police’s action, claiming that it was a ‘cheap stunt’ aimed at creating ‘disunity’ among the people.

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), one of the main organizer of the Coalition Against War (GAP-Gabungan Anti Perang) who organized five anti war vigil on Saturday, 10 January to highlight the plight of the sufferings in Gaza and Sri Lanka is amused by the way how the Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar goes out to defend the police’ arrest of the 21 people at the candlelight vigil, saying that the demonstrators were not concerned with the issue of Israeli aggression. This is cheap stunt to create disunity among the people.
